"While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word." Acts 10:44
Back to "Listen to God's Lessons"
If you're not familiar with the passage in the heading above, it refers to when Peter entered the house of Cornelius and his family. This was an unusual event in the church at the time. Cornelius and his family were Gentiles, and until that day, only Jews had received the salvation that was in Yeshua, the Son of God. But, as Peter preached, "the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word." The other Christian Jews that had come with Peter were astonished, because Cornelius and his family received the gift of the Holy Ghost -- just like they had. The Jews knew that because they heard Cornelius and his family speak with tongues.
What I'm getting at is no one ever knows when the Holy Ghost is going to fall, or where, or upon whom. No one knows.
"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is everyone that is born of the Spirit." John 3:8
But, we do know that it falls when the truth is preached. In the passage about Cornelius and his family (the first Gentiles to enter the Church), Peter was preaching the truth, and the Holy Ghost fell.
"And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen." Mark 16:20
"God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will." Hebrews 2:4
I'll tell you another thing, it doesn't matter how the truth is preached. It doesn't matter who is preaching. God's Spirit falls when His gospel is preached. A person doesn't have to be eloquent, or well-educated in oration, or charismatic, or charming, or good-looking, or persuasive. A person need only preach the truth in the Spirit.
"... not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts." Zechariah 4:6
I can say that I know this from personal experience. If you've never been in a fellowship where the Holy Ghost fell, you're missing a beautiful experience. I'll tell you of one of the most profound experiences I attended. It was a sleep-over of young teenage girls. This was at a Pentecostal church. A handful of the church girls were having a sleep-over at a small country church. They were doing some worshipful singing and lots of giggling and being silly. They were supervised by a few of the church leaders. It was almost like they were "playing church" with teenage girls playing all the main parts. A young woman in the church got up to "preach." Actually, her style was more like teaching. But, you could tell that she had well prepared for her message. She cross referenced many scriptures that basically were all saying that if one seeks God first, then everything else will fall together into place (even romance -- remember, she was speaking to young teenage girls). She had barely finished speaking and the Holy Ghost fell on everyone who was there. Girls were laughing and crying. Some could barely walk down the aisle. It was amazing. We all became drunk on the Spirit of God. It was divine -- what a Friday night party!
The point I'm trying to make is that no one expected the Holy Ghost to fall. The speaker was no great speaker, just a young woman who was speaking the word of God. She didn't stray from her point, but simply shared the words of God. She wasn't expecting God's Spirit to fall and neither was anyone else.
Another instance that I know of is when an old preacher went to preach at a friend's church. My friend said that he spoke quietly, was old and tremulous, and he finished quickly. But, he spoke the gospel. And my friend said that no one could believe how the Holy Ghost fell and filled that place. Several people received the baptism of the Holy Ghost the evening that that old worn-out preacher spoke.
Remember it's not by might, nor by power, nor by how great a speaker anyone is -- it's by God's Holy Spirit. When God's truth is preached that is when the Holy Ghost can fall. Nothing quite like God's Spirit falling in a church fellowship. But, as the Lord said -- you never know when it's coming or where it's going. Nothing like it!
Let Your Spirit fall on us, Oh Lord! We hunger and thirst for Your touch! Fill our cups to overflowing with Your Spirit!
